I know that we can use the same logic of “it is your duty to vote” with the youngsters, but it is imperative that we let our voices be heard. The constitution gives us the right to have contrarian views but silent suffering should not be the means of passive-aggressive behavior. Not participating in the process and letting others control the narrative rarely works out in my opinion. There are some things that are beyond our control but I feel the move voices we have then the better the choir sounds.
Alpha Phi Alpha has pushed the Voter Registration Program “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” for decades, but I think our target audience has been the college-educated. My graduate chapter serves Yazoo City, Canton, and Lexington and we want to reach the unregistered or inactive voters. I would welcome your thoughts on how we get people to see their vote as a way of voicing their local interests as well as influencing things on a national level.
