November 3, 2020 was an epic day. I decided to take the day off and serve as election day supporter. Our Adult Ministry group decided weeks ago to participate in the church’s effort to support voters by providing water and snacks to people waiting in line to vote.

We were met with many smiles, but some individuals declined the gesture. It was different observing the process from this perspective, but it was refreshing to see the patience exhibited by all the voters.

The ability to participate in the democratic process is one that is afforded to American citizens. I do think that we should continue to work to make sure more citizens participate in the process. I also love the effort of many states to restore the right to vote for formally convicted felons who have served their time. A life time band on voting, owning a gun, and other rights that are forever stricken seems unfair as a few examples from Blacks Law Dictionary.

What I observed yesterday, filled me with hope. Holding elected official accountable through the power of the vote, is what my ancestors paved the way for us to do by insisting that all people be allowed to vote.
