The Democratic-Republican party started in 1796 as opposition to the Federalists party according to ushistory.org. 1796 marked the first election in the United States according to the same online article.
The Federalists party preferred the policies of Alexander Hamilton and included merchants and artisans that were building commercial enterprises throughout the northeastern United States.
The Democratic-Republican party included farmers and other working class citizens from German and Scots-Irish communities.
John Quincy Adams of the Federalists party won that first election and became the first President of the United States of America. Thomas Jefferson, from the Democratic-Republican party, came in second an began serving as the Vice President of the United States of America.
Fast-forward to 2020 and the two-party system still exists. President Trump refuses to concede although he lost both the electoral votes and popular vote. He has facilitated the filling of numerous lawsuits to contest election results across many states. As of 12:00:01 on January 20, 2021, President Trump will become a normal citizen with a limited cadre of secret service protection.
The process of political fighting will begin all over again. Isn’t it a beautiful thing that we have arrived in similar fashion to where it all began in 1796.
