Jewel Brother Vertner Woodson Tandy was the state of New York’s first registered architect. He was also the first African American to pass the military commissioning examination. He was commissioned First Lieutenant in the 15th Infantry of the New York State National Guard. After graduating from Cornell, Jewel Brother Vertner Woodson Tandy returned to Harlem and played a key role in the Harlem Renaissance. (“Jewel Vertner Woodson Tandy,” 2013)
